Things to do in Roxbury revolve primarily around the outdoors. The Roxbury Land Trust, a non-profit organization, maintains much of the community’s open spaces with the goal of preserving Roxbury’s rural flair. Two sites in particular showcase the Trust’s efforts, Mine Hill and River Road Preserve.
Mine Hill is the site of Roxbury’s first mine. Today the mining activities are long over, but residents instead have a rugged and diverse landscape to explore and enjoy. The site’s trail system has routes for beginners and the more adventurous alike. Explorers are treated to old furnaces, eerie mine tunnel entrances, a marble bridge and an old mule trail.
River Road Preserve also has a network of trails; these wind amid wooded areas along the banks of the Shepaug River. The terrain at River Road Preserve is forested and hilly.
Other attractions in the area include the Lake Compounce Theme Park, the Carousel Museum of New England, the American Clock & Watch Museum, Mohawk Mountain Ski Area, Woodbury Ski Area and Tarrywile Park & Mansion and Westside Nature Preserve.
